CVT Transmission and How to Keep it Cool

In Defense of the CVT

The CVT is actually a pretty good transmission. The early ones earned a bad reputation, but the current ones are very capable if you manage the heat with a transmission cooler.

A unique advantage of the CVT

It is very common to increase your tire size for off road use. A larger tires lifts everything, inclusinf the lower control arms. But your tires are the last "gear" in determining the overall gear ratio. So on the highway, your slightly larger tires would feel "boggy" with a traditional 6 speed transmission. Ideally, 6th gear would be a little lower to compensate for the slightly larger tires. Well the continuously variable transmission CAN make that slight adjustment.  The ECU is always trying to keep the engine RPMs as low as possible while still delivering the speed requested by the accelerator pedal.

The cost of larger tires

At road speed, when CVT has gotten off of its lowest ratio, everything is fine. But larger tires hurt the crawl ratio when the CVT is still using its lowest gear ratio. Most of the time, taller tires are worth it, but you'll pay the price when slowly climbing steep inclines, especially at high altitude.
