All about Skid Plates

Why you need skid plates

If you've setup your suspension for optimal articulation, then your ground clearance will occasionally be insufficient. Skid plates allow your car to sustain light and medium hits without damage. They do not make you invincible. If you've prioritized ground clearance, then you'll need skid plates less frequently, but you'll be lifting wheel and losing traction more frequently.

My first set of skid plates

I selected the triple skid plate deal from Primitive Racing for my first SK Forester. This included the engine skid, transmission skid, and the rear differential skid. I have been using them for 5 years and they have held up very well. They are 3/16" thick aluminum, but I would prefer 1/4". My only other complaint is the vents that are pressed into the aluminum. They look cool, but they don't offer real ventilation, only a rough surface that prevents sliding, holds dirt and mud, and weakens the structure. After a while, I removed mine and used a 4 pound engineering hammer and some pavement to close the vents.

My new set for skid plates

I've learned a bit since then, so I selected the Crawford Performance transmission skid plate because it's just like my Primitive one, but it has no silly vents.  I'm omitting the rear differential skid plate because the cast iron diff is plenty strong. I'm going to make my own 1/4" engine skid plate as part of my DIY front bumper. By integrating the two, I'll be able to spread the force of impacts over more mounting points.
